Politics and Hair

The important things: We go back to “normal.” My hair was already bad before the quarantine.

So…I hear from Trump that it’s all Obama’s fault. Somehow, this global virus, this global pandemic is Obama’s fault. To say it politely, “I don’t get it.” To say it viscerally, like I feel it, “Are you fucking kidding me?”

A lot of things our Chief of Country says are so ridiculous as to be utterly unbelievable. A lot of the things he says are just downright stupid. Does he not have any intelligent staff member, a single intelligent person, to give him some pointers, some suggestions as to the really stupid, the extra stupid stuff, he should never, ever say? Things like, “I have a hunch there are many fewer cases than they say,” or, more recently, whatever he said that blamed Obama for somehow being responsible for this global pandemic that originated in China. Huh? I could look it up to get his exact words, but frankly, I’m tired and I’m not in the mood to find an exact quotation. Then again, if King Trump did have any intelligent staff he would probably: a. fire them or b. not listen to them anyway, so there’s that. No matter what, when he does say stupid stuff, then he can always ask his PR person one, two, three or…shit, I’ve lost count, to smooth over whatever idiot thing he said last. You know what they say about every village has one. It’s just unfortunate that ours is in the White House.

Like everyone else, I am tired of staying at home. Like everyone, I miss my friends and family, going out to eat, getting my hair done. Holy cow, my hair is so bad. Today might be the day I have to finally give up, just shave it off completely and look like a cancer victim. Errr, cancer survivor. The problem with my hair is that I was just about to get it done, right before the entire country (and world) was utterly broken by this virus, and just before California closed. I know, we reopened again, but honestly, virus wise, there’s no excuse. I know why we reopened, for stuff like money, saving the economy and so on; I understand. It’s important, but it will kill more of us than needed. If we had just shut down more aggressively and stayed home more (and better) for a wee bit longer, we might have been more successful in clamping it down. On the other hand, I get it. I want to go to Starbucks, too.

Let’s leave the discussion of the virus and careless political (and personal) choices and return to talking about the important stuff…like hair. The last time I had my hair done, I had some grey streaks put in, just to help camouflage the other grey streaks and make it look more, hmm, deliberate, shall we say? It didn’t end up looking more deliberate; it just ended up looking more grey, and I immediately hated my hair. I wanted my old hair back. I was frustrated I’d chosen the grey instead of the gold highlights that I would usually get. Sheesh; it seemed like a good idea at the time, so long ago, before I pulled the trigger and made my color choices. Plus I got carried away by those cute little color swaths of hair she showed me. Those swaths are a little like color palettes for paint, except they aren’t because they are for hair. I guess that’s why you say “like.”

The unfortunate outcome is that I chose badly, got greys and silvers instead of golds and lights, and ended up coming out of my $160 dollar visit somewhat disappointed. I almost called her back the next day to get the hair repaired, but in ten years she’s never let me down before and I didn’t want to hurt her feelings. I know that $160 is a lot of money, but hair is expensive. That’s just what it costs to look that old with hair you hate. Oh, well. I normally don’t get my hair done as often as you are supposed to. I try to stretch it out as long as I can between visits, rejecting the usual 8-week recommended schedule. Little did I know that decision to “be nice” to my hairdresser would come to haunt me when COVID-19 struck. Damn it. Somehow, I’m sure it’s Obama’s fault.

This sign says closed. Some hair places are re-opening, but I’m not sure what’s scarier. My hair, or the virus?

Meg Shoes would like to be known as Meg Shores, or not, kinda liked being Mick Shorts for months after a phone name exchange. Damn arthritic fingers and dentures!

Geeze! $160 bucks to look old-or beautiful. I keep it simple and exciting by going to Great Clips where you never get the same person twice, ask for a very short pixie cut, flash a favorite photo of Judi Dench, usually after 3-4 months of grow out, and wait to see how each stylist defines short, pixie, and even cut. I’ve been razored, electronically and manually (an oddly painful but relaxing experience) and scissored from front to back, back to front, side by side and aside from saying, “go shorter” without direction from me I always come away looking respectably groomed, if not like Judi Dench for $14. I pay $20 and feel generous. It’s an adventure, and has never brought tears. I tell them all I love it, knowing they’ve done their best and it’s worth every penny to be surprised by method and result. Now, I’m wearing a selection of cute caps fashioned for chemo patients as a 60’s shag is so NOT my look and will continue to do so til this pandemic passes. It’s only hair. As to color-human genetics are such a complex thing, another adventure. Let it play out, enjoy the surprises. As long as you’re smiling, and have run a comb through your hair so as not to appear deranged, you will look beautiful.
